How To Start A Memoir

There are many people who have led extraordinary lives. If you feel as though you fit this bill, or that you have a story to be told through the journey of your life, you might consider writing it out in novel format. There are several successful novels of similar origins that have made a real difference in the lives of others. Whatever the reason, here is how to start a memoir.

If you want to write a memoir that people will actually become engulfed in, you can take some inspiration from successful writers before you. You have to understand how good memoirs read, before you can actually write one that others can be impacted by. Some keys to your success are: the importance of accuracy, to write it all out, and to describe both the good and the bad.

Being historically accurate is one of the most important things to writing a successful memoir. You see, if your story does not sync up with the events you reference, you lose credibility as an author. More importantly, your story loses credibility as well. If you simply cannot remember what was happening in the world at the point you are writing about, a little bit of research goes a long way.

The next key to starting your memoirs is to just write. Seems simple enough, right? The point of this statement is that a lot of people who are writing out their life’s journeys try to edit as they go along. Truth be told, you will be a lot more candid and coherent if you just write out everything and worry later about editing it all to read well.

The last point is to have a story that balances the good things that have happened in your life against the bad things. Too much of one side or the other will likely cause your readers to lose interest. If it is exclusively about all the good things, it becomes something people cannot relate to. If it focuses on all the bad things that happened to you, the book becomes too depressing for most to care to finish.

Many people write their memoirs for differing reasons. For many, it is an opportunity to candidly retell their lives for their families to appreciate for years to come. Others want a grander presentation, and believe their story can impact the world. No matter the reason, this is how to start a memoir.
